Abstract:

With a completely novel way of production, YSTRAL Conti-TDS Inline Dispersing Machines have started to displace traditional high speed dissolvers for lacquer, paint and printing ink production. Whether you manufacture decorative paints, industrial coatings, coil coatings, automotive lacquers, printing inks or even adhesives, large amounts of powders have to be dispersed into liquids. In most cases, this process requires high effort, it is time consuming and usually dusty. Abstract:

Pigmentary TiO2 and Fe2O3 production at each of 500K tons per year through HCl wet chemistry is under construction. The first production line is completed and operating. Advantages in terms of environmental impact, product quality, resource utilization, of this technology comparing with the existing processes are summarized. The properties such as crystal structure, morphology, particle size distribution and purity are characterized. Basic application features and weathering stability in coating are presented.

About the Speaker:

At present, Dr. Paul Cao is working as R&D Director in Fujian Kuncai Material Technology  Co.,Ltd., responsible for new product development and technical supervision. Before joining Kuncai, Dr. Cao worked at Engelhard/BASF USA as researcher, Arch/Lonza as technical consultant. Paul graduated from Fudan University, China, Ph.D from Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Science during 1988-1994, Post-doctoral experience at Jilin University during 1994-1995, Ph.D from Clemson University in USA during 1995-1999, Postdoctor from University of Houston in USA during 1999-2000.

Abstract:

Zenexo® UTP is a new generation of colored aluminium effect pigments based on an ultra-thin aluminium substrate of reproducible thickness. UTP particles are significantly thinner and provide a tight particle thickness deviation, which results in an outstanding aspect ratio when compared to other colored aluminium effect pigment generations. This leads to a better orientation behaviour of the effect pigment particles and improved light reflection, hence brilliant surfaces. The pigment is safe-to-use, easy to transport, easy to store, easy to formulate (with no solvents!) and provides outstanding coloristical features, i.e. hiding power, flop and color saturation.

Mr. Elvin Tong, graduated from SCUT in 2010, majored in Material Science, Master degree. After school he worked in Asia Pacific technology center of AkzoNobel powder coating more than 3 years – mainly responsible for powder coating R&D and application in automotive components. The rheology of waterborne systems should be carefully designed to meet particular application needs enabling the paint to perform well during the entire process and handling cycle from production and storage to application. To meet a specific rheology profile and thixotropy behavior such as levelling and anti-sagging balance, one needs to combine different shear type thickeners. The mass release of VOC in traditional JS waterproof coating and K11 waterproof mortar, with high alkalinity of the cement and hydrolysis of the conventional emulsion.

The rigorous TVOC emission standards of indoor building materials in Europe and US countries, eg. GEV of German and A+ of France.

With the increasing popularity of TVOC in domestic leading companies, it is time for us to think about how to achieve a lower TVOC.

Trinseo styrene-butadiene emulsion provides an effective solution for a lower TVOC with improving the mechanical properties of waterproof coatings and mortars.

Cardolite produces a series of solvent free (SF) and low viscosity epoxy curing agents based on new phenalkamine and phenalkamide technologies. Abstract:

Since decades, synthetic binders have been a preponderant part of coating formulations for the several benefits they impart to the coatings, whether we talk about pure acrylics, styrene acrylics, pure polyurethanes or hybrid urethane/acrylic polymers. Polyurethanes dispersions are widely used as binders for their contribution on mechanical resiliency of the coating over the whole range of hardness, from very soft until hard and brittle polymers. They are generally speaking weaker than acrylics, but specific functionalization and crosslinking, along with the selection of high quality building blocks, allow to achieve very high performance that easily go beyond formulator expectations. Polyurethane beads exploit the high chemical versatility in combining those building blocks, that a signature process allows to manufacture in a sharply controlled manner ending in a spherical shape solid additive, which is decisive for aesthetic properties of coatings. Developing bio based alternatives to existing synthetic binders may consist in utilizing same building blocks coming from renewable sources instead of fossil sources. More commonly, it consists in obtaining same or better performance while using different raw material structures. The explanation is mainly that natural or bio derived materials come from fully different synthesis pathways compared to synthetic alternatives. Many bio based polyols (up to 100% in weight) are commercially available and, combined with specific polyisocyanates, allow to obtain polyether or polyester-based polyurethanes, both in dispersions or beads form, with a bio based content up to 70% in weight approximately. 

The presentation discusses innovative bio based polymers that thanks to their outstanding performance allow to achieve sustainable coatings formulations with high performance level. The core part of this work is focused on 2K formulation for “natural look” wood flooring, in the second part different applications is to be discussed too.

About the Speaker:

Stefano Fumagalli is the Technical Manager of Coating & Inks at Lamberti S.p.A. After completing Industrial Chemistry Degree at the University of Milan, he worked as an R&D researcher in a paper mill and then as a Technical Manager for a paper coating production line. In 2000 he moved to Lamberti S.p.A. as a Technical Manager of the Paper BU for coating and surface treatment products and formulations. In 2011 he took the responsibility of PU technology management and since 2014 he has technically managed surface treatment in Coatings & Ink Division. He is the co-author of several international patents related to the field of paper coating formulations and tailor-made polymers for waterborne surface treatment on several substrates.

Cobalt carboxylate driers no longer meet the regulatory demands in some regions. Borcher's novel drier technologies not only improve dry time and paint performance but also improve the labeling of the paint system by utilizing cobalt- free, VOC free, and APEO free technology. This novel technology can improve cure in most challenging systems.
