Abstract:

Since its development in the last century, acrylic resin has been widely used in the application areas of coating, ink, automotive industry, organic glass, medical apparatus, etc., owing to its excellent weatherability, high transparency and outstanding physiochemical properties. To date, the majority of acrylic resins are saturated polymer; on the other hand, acrylic resins with unsaturated side chains can be utilized in various special applications, e.g. further polymerization leading to branched polymers, which are especially suitable for ink dispersion. Furthermore, if introduced in UV formulations, the unsaturated acrylic resins act more than as filler, rather cross linking with UV monomers during curing, resulting in enhanced performance of UV coatings.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Wei Xia works as an R&D scientist at Shanghai Pioneer Chemicals. He earned his bachelor degree at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in applied chemistry. After that, he finished his master courses at National University of Singapore, followed by his phd study at Technical University of Munich. He subsequently started his postdoctoral research in polymer chemistry at Dalian University of Technology, which was financially supported by German Research Foundation. After joining Pioneer Chemicals, he is mainly responsible for the development of novel acrylic resins.

What is Silicate Paint?

Silicate paint uses inorganic potassium water glass as binder. They are also called water glass paints or Keimfarben (after the inventor). Mineral paints were patented in 1878 by the craftsman and researcher Adolf Wilhelm Keim.

Abstract:

Sartomer has developed some new specialty oligomers with enhanced performance properties for the UV/EB/LED, peroxide cure, these products can be used for the coatings, inks, adhesives. These new product properties will be presented.

The new polyester oligomers are good for UV/EB inks as they are high reactivity, with excellent pigment wetting and dispersion ability. When compared to urethane oligomers, they are cost-effective alternatives.

The new urethane oligomers are designed for adhesives and coatings, they have good adhesion for PE, PP and untreated PET. Stain resistance oligomer of no silicone type has balance properties of low shrinkage and resist to acid and alkali.

SARBIO products are based on renewable raw materials, building on the groundwork established by traditional acrylate and methacrylate performance and continuously opening new possibilities to customers who are developing innovative formulations with improved carbon footprint.

After graduated from Qingdao Science University in 2002, Ms. Julie ZHOU was mainly involved in UV cure and UV applications. She joined Sartomer Asia in 2013, is an Application Manager now, and is in charge of UV cure and applications including electronics, inks, adhesives, and different kinds of coatings.

Abstract:

Organic modified silicone give excellent wetting and high efficiency which are the most important ingridents in the formulation! However,it will lead to foam problem on the other hand. Acetylenic diols have good wetting and better defoaming ability, but unsatisfied efficiency and no contribution on leveling are its weakness.

Gemini structure silicone avoids the above problems, also shows excellent wetting, leveling and defoaming performance.

Abstract:

The coatings industry, and in particular the automotive coatings as technology driver, today is always aiming to achieve maximum performance for which cost, appearance, durability and workability are the major driving forces. However, all of these attributes cannot be maximized simultaneously.

Hence, the important place that pearl effect pigments have in today coatings industry, a field dominated by very stringent performance demands, and their role as color-styling and design tools. This has led to the development of new substrates for the construction of such pigments to help satisfy these attributes and demands.

The technical development of synthetic mica substrate (Fluorophlogopite) and the resulting effect pigments have come a long way over the past 20 years. Kuncai has taken the lead in this development and took it to extremes/pushed it as far as possible by first developing a sustainable, reproducible technology and secondly lifting this to even higher levels having developed a unique multilayer metal oxide deposition technique, leading to a completely new generation of synthetic mica effect pigments. Thus, coatings formulators and stylists have the option to create even higher levels of chroma, color intensity and light reflection for their products than would be possible with any existing effect pigment currently in the marketplace. All of that in the light of the industries technological demands.

This presentation will examine the significance of this technological and coloristic step change which has the potential to prove a “game changer" to the industry. It will highlight some of the advantages Kuncai synthetic mica effect pigments have over what is regarded as current "industry standard".

Compared with wax emulsions, micronized waxes are more resistant to scratch and abrasion. When in used in water based system however, they may encounter issues for poor dispersion or poor stability. Clariant modified natural micronized waxes are designed to provide easy dispersibility in water based system, in addition to excellent scratch resistance and pleasant touch feel, thus to enable optimized surface performance even for water based coatings.

Clariant will present the latest developments in the field of environmentally friendly light stabilizer solutions for waterborne coatings. Hostavin® 3315 DISP and Hostavin 3070 DISP are the ideal UVA and HALS combination for modern high-performance coating systems. In addition, the increasing use of UV cured coatings to replace solvent borne systems is given a light stabilizer boost in performance with Clariant’s synergistic solutions known as AddWorks® LXRTM 313 and AddWorks LXR 314.

Passive fire protection of building materials and building constructions is evident to avoid fire disasters and to safe people’s lives. Phosphorous based non halogenic flame retardants are used to reduce ignitability and spread of flame properties of combustible building materials like wood and plastics and in combination with synergists they can also act as intumescent coatings which under the influence of heat generate a carbon rich insulation layer for the fire protection of load bearing steel constructions and thus prolonging the time for safe evacuation as well as enabling fire fighting measures. The chemistry of intumescent reaction partners is discussed in detail as well as lab fire tests and official fire test scenarios according to national standards. Examples are given how intumescent coatings are applied on building site and what the coming trends are in the intumescent coatings business.

Milena Wundlechner is Clariant's Global Technical Segment manager for wax additives in Coatings/Inks. After her master's degree in polymeric material engineering she worked in the adhesives industry, followed by several years as material project and innovation manager for a BOSCH Group subsidiary.

Jean-Yves Desrats holds a Master's Degree in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, from CPE Lyon, France. He joined Clariant in 1993 as an application and development engineer in the paints and printing inks laboratory and was responsible for the development of pigment dispersions and technical service. He later held the position as Head of Laboratory for special applications. In 2003, he joined the Coatings team as Technical Marketing Manager, responsible for the decorative and wood coatings segment within the Business Unit Pigments. Since 2008, he has held the position as Global Technical & Innovation Manager for Coatings within the Business Line, Performance Additives.

Dr. Klaus Bender was born April 25th. 1957 near Frankfurt, Germany. He received his PhD in Organic Chemistry from Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen, Germany in 1988. He started his career as a lab chemist in 1989 in the chemical industry. Since 1991 he was heading the R&D of a flame retardant chipboard producer. During that time he was an expert for FR building products in the German national standardization committee DIN in Berlin. In 2006 he took over the Head of R&D position at Ruetgers Organics GmbH (Producer of "Pyroplast ST" brand) in Mannheim, Germany. Abstract:

Interference pigments are individualists, i.e. each interference pigment has unique optical properties that set it apart from others. A particular feature of colorful interference pigments is the shift of the reflection maximum to shorter wavelengths when they are illuminated flatter. At the same time the reflection increases.

A colorful interference pigment can be best described by its interference and aspecular line: The interference line is formed from a*b* values for steep, classic and flat illumination at the same difference angle of gloss (aspecular). Due to the aforementioned reflection shift, the interference line always points in the direction of flat illumination counterclockwise.

The aspecular line is formed from the a*b* values resulting from measurements at fixed illumination angle. Here, the difference angle (aspecular) is changed off gloss. The anchor shape resulting from both lines is characteristic of each interference pigment.

Based on this, the idea arose to place a coordinate system in 45°/as15° for further characterization. Furthermore, the sub-arms, the ratio of their lengths and the angles give a precise definition of each interference pigment. A total of six parameters characterize an interference pigment or aluminum pigment.

Abstract:

Durability and resistance requirements of paints and coatings are constantly increasing and at the same time paints need to be healthier for consumers and environmental. Talc as natural, inert and non-toxic material with lamellar and hydrophobic particles is economical and safe choice for many decorative and protective coatings. However, the talc grades are not always the same. The source of talc has an influence of its’ performance in coatings. There are a lot of talc grades that are not pure talc, but mixtures of different minerals. The talc mixtures have lower protective properties compared with pure, platy talc grades.

This presentation demonstrates how ELEMENTIS manufactures pure talc grades with optimised particle size distribution for low VOC industrial coatings. These, so called low viscosity talc grades, are made of a macro-crystalline ore, refined and milled by special process to have high purity and optimised particle size distribution for different coating applications. By low viscosity talc grades PVC or/and solid content of the formulations can be increased and at the same time the corrosion resistance is improved. This means healthier, cheaper and better performing formulations than traditional solvent borne coatings.

Veli Kilpeläinen is educated as Chemical Engineer in Chemistry. He graduated in 1986 from Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finland, after which he worked as polymer researcher at Neste Chemicals – current Borealis Polymers. His responsibility at Neste Chemicals was to develop multi-step polymerisation technology for new generation polyethylene product family. In 1993 he joined to the talc business and to the current company. He started as a Research and Customer Service Engineer for paint industry. Most liquid wall paints today are water-born and therefore require the use of biocides to prevent the growth of bacteria and other microbes. German chemical company WACKER introduces NEXIVA®, a new product line consisting of dispersible polymer powders that allow manufacturers to produce interior wall paints in powder form. The technology does not require the addition of biocides and offers key advantages when it comes to storage and transport. The powder paints can be prepared by professional painters and do-it-yourselfers (DIYers) on demand at a precise dosage, which avoids the amount of wasted product.  

Paints formulated with dispersible polymer powder have a very low volatile organic compound (VOC) content and conform to major ecolabels. They do not need organic solvents, plasticizers, or film-forming agents and are low-odor. Initial market feedback confirms the high quality of these paints, especially regarding hiding power and wet-scrub resistance.

However, this type of formulation tends to have pinhole issue. To address the issue, the strong defoamer or deaerator, e.g. hydrocarbon based, has been used to eliminate pinhole within the dried coating film, but the poor compatibility of the hydrocarbon based chemicals in water based formulations will result in lower gloss, poor leveling and DOI, even sometimes craters issue. Boosting color strength is on the forefront of coatings formulators' and manufacturers' minds. However, for many systems, improving color performance is a difficult task. Whether it is a ready-made dispersion or a fully formulated system, large adjustments to the formula can be unfeasible due to manufacturing, VOC and consumer restraints. Today’s technology allows for post addition of an additive to improve color acceptance, color strength and quality of the pigmented system. A simple addition of a color booster or compatibilizer to the base will result in a stronger, cleaner and more chromatic color. Benefits are evident in tints with difficult organic pigments and carbon blacks. An additional benefit is a reduction or elimination of color rub-out and improved compatibility of universal water-based systems used in solvent-based bases. This presentation will provide additional data, visuals and tools that aid in solving color acceptance issues and create more flexibility in product development.

From 2004 to 2013, Dr. Sebastian Moschel gained a diploma and a PhD in organic chemistry at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. Until 2018, he worked for Atotech on the development of corrosion protection coatings for the automotive industry. Today at Budenheim, he is responsible for innovation and application development in the cluster paints with a strong focus on flame retardant coating ingredients.

Mr. Yue Liu gained a diploma and bachelor in Environmental Science  in 2006, and gained MBA diploma and master in 2016. Yue Liu has long period experience on coating and additives industry, such as building and construction coatings, corrosion protection coatings, powders coating…Today at Budenheim, he focus on flame retardant coating ingredients and applications.
